Born and raised in Winnipeg, Serena grew up in a household where they often faced risk and physical assault. Over time, they found comfort and expression through creativity, exploring improv, music, and visual art.

Today, Serena facilitates the Art Program at Thrive, where community members develop their skills in both traditional and digital mediums, including clay, acrylic painting, and graphic design. Having grown up with limited financial resources, Serena worked hard to grow their knowledge of art and hopes to inspire others to build on their own talents and find personal avenues of self-expression.

As a transgender individual, Serena has found a welcoming community at Thrive. They look forward to arriving each week, exploring new creative endeavours with their students, and continuing to share their passion and creativity with others.

Art taught me that no matter where we start, we can always create a space to be ourselves.
